Monthly meetings of Barrow Civic and Local History Society have started up again after a break of almost two years. The 2020 programme was cancelled after only two meetings because of the Covid 19 restrictions.
Members and visitors came along to the AGM on Friday 21st January at the Trinity Centre, Abbey Road. After a short business meeting, our guest speaker Geoff Holme gave his illustrated talk, “Railway Heritage and Me.” Photographs and anecdotes gave everyone a personal insight into how Geoff’s interest in railways began and developed throughout his life. He has a vast collection of photographs showing local places where railway tracks can no longer be seen, including the tracks on Barrow Island where the workmen’s trains used to arrive from Millom and Grange. Geoff’s presentation had been put together using a wide range of sources, including newspaper articles, postcards, railway staff registers, guide books, signalling information and Acts of Parliament .He is constantly adding to his collection, having recently acquired a photograph and map of Stainton Quarry.
The next meeting of the society will be at 2pm on Friday 25th February at the Trinity Centre, Abbey Road. The guest speaker will be Mike Garforth who will be giving an illustrated talk about the National Memorial Arboretum.
Admission charges are £2.50 for members and £3.00 for non- members. Charges include refreshments and everyone is invited to attend.
